Norwegian Wood- A Review

-TheBeatles, Norwegian Wood

教英语“Isn’t it good, Norwegianwood?”

NorwegianWood tells the tale of Toru Watanabe, a 37year old man who, upon hearing the song Norwegian Wood on a plane, reflects back on the time he went to college in Japan 20 years ago,and more specifically, the relationship he had with a girl calledNaoko. Naoko and Toru were childhood acquaintances, knowing eachother through Naoko少女教英语’s longtime boyfriend Kizuki, who was alsoToru’s best (and only) friend. Yet when Kizuki tragically commitssuicide shortly before graduating high school, Toru and Naoko stoptalking to each other, until they accidentally meet each other inthe subway a few months into university. And though they try toestablish some semblance of a normal relationship, it is clear thatKizuki听听elements’s suicide has affected them both in permanent andirreparable ways. Toru has become even more sullen and reserved, while Naoko has been left with serious psychological and emotionaltrauma, which eventually causes her to become hospitalized in asanitorium. It is around this time where Toru meets Midori, aclassmate who seems to be everything Naoko is not. While Naoko isquiet, shy and damaged, Midori is outgoing and cheerful, and Toruquickly finds himself drawn to her as well. But as time goes on andToru看看教英语’s relationship with these two women grow普特英语听力网s and evolves, he isforced to make a choice, one that will have profound consequencesall of their lives.

Butwith all its talk of death,Norwegian Wood neverdelves into pure despair. Yes, death is still there, but alongsideit th中语自教 知乎ere is also hope. Like Toru, Murakami understands that deathis not the opposite of life, but merely a part of it. The oppositeof this is also true. Just as death permeates every pore of thisnovels skin, Murakami makes sure to include some element of hope ineven the darkest of moments, Hope, which comes in the form of quietguitar songs and shared meals, nighttime walks and windy beaches,is the novels answer to the questions it poses. Even at the end, when all seems lost, there is hope, a beautiful, miserable glimmerof light that convinces our damaged characters to keep going.

In the beginning ofNorwegian Wood , one of the maincharacters, Naoko, tells the other main character, Toru, that shecan never say what she wants to say. She goes on to explain thatwhenever she tries to say something, all she gets are the wrongwords. I guess I should feel the same way about this review. In mymind, I had a clear picture of what I wanted to say, the points Iwanted to make. But when I began typing, the ideas in my mind cameout jumbled and incoherent; like Naoko, I had a bad case of thewrong words. At this point, Ithefeeling’ve probably spent hours agonizingover this review, its structure, its language, and its content. Iknow this isn’t perfect, but this is the best that I can do. I hopeyou enjoy.

NorwegianWood has a special place in Murakami英语自教网’sbibliography for being his only “normal” book.Murakami has gained international recognition forwriting surreal, magical works such as Kafka on the Shore and TheWind Up Bird Chronicle, butNorwegian Wood , the novel that made hima literary sensation in Japan, is just about normal, coming of agelove. Yet when readingNorwegian Wood , you canget’t help get thefeeling that elements of the supernatural are still present, buriedsomewhere in the novel’s subconscious. These elements are neverexplicitly stated, but instead blend into the novels backdrop, giving the setting of the story an ethereal, transcendent quality. Our brains tell us that Murakami***缓速英语’s Japan is set in the real world, but it feels as if we进建get’re reading about some alternate universe, where universities and classrooms inhabit the same space as seedybars and adult movie theaters, and where the lush, greenenvironment of a sanatorium can quickly shift into the clinical, uncaring walls of a hospital. Murakamican’s prose is both incrediblybeautiful as well as meticulously detailed, but all it does is addto the otherworldly quality of the book. In Murakami’s Japan, oneof contradictions and facades, it is easy to see why our charactersare so obsessed with death.

There中语自教 知乎’s a scene at the very beginningofNorwegianWoodin which Naoko and Toru are walking in aforest. Naoko tells Toru about the field well, an impossibly deephole in the midst of the forest where people fall in and never comeback. Norwegian Wood exists halfway between the forest and thefield well. It is a novel of contrasts and contradictions, wheredeath and life arenelements’t opposites, and where the lines of reality andfantasy are hazy at best. And just like its flawedcharacters,Norwegian Woodisn教会教英语’tperfect. There are many criticisms to be had about its plot andcharacters, some of which I wholeheartedly agree with. But it’s a book th看看ofat has managed to capturesomething important abou念晓得thefeelingt young love, its beauty and its tragedy. And for t比照1下少女教英语hat, it deserves my highest praise.
